COURAGE--AND RIGHT--TO DREAM

The Navy diver is not a fighting man.
He is a salvage expert.
If it's lost underwater, he finds it.
If it's sunk, he brings it up.
If it's in the way, he moves it.

If he's lucky, he dies young two hundred feet beneath the waves,
Because that is the closest he will ever come to being a hero

No one in their right mind would ever want the job.
Or so they say.

Carl Brashear had a wish--to become the first African-American Master Chief Navy Diver.  He had the ambition to rise above his impoverished roots as a sharecropper's son in the segregated South.  He had the self-respect to defy the racism that challenged him through every rank of the service.  He had the ability to prove to his detractors--from the superiors to his family--that his dream could come true.   Then, when it was just within reach, a tragic accident would become the ultimate test of his courage.  But as the odds got stronger, so did Carl Brashear.....

This is the inspiring true story of one man at war with adversity who survived insurmountable obstacles--from an oppressive childhood in 1930s rural Kentucky to a career beset by bigotry to a devastating accident--with a profound and indomitable faith.  It would eventually take Carl Breashear to unexpected glory in the Navy Hall of Fame, where his dream became more than a triumph of the human spirit.  It became history.
